Ocean Gate Completes Public Plaza in Historic Area of Delray Beach
Date: 06-24-2010

Stuart - The City of Delray Beach CRA hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 24th, Thursday evening.  Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, local radio personality “James T” emceed the entertainment for Art & Jazz on the Avenue that included music with food and festivities to welcome residents to the new park.  The City praised Ocean Gate for the quality of construction, and the project coming in on budget and on schedule.

The grounds feature a raised platform with a stage defined by a shade sail structure.  The City chose a sail structure that will withstand up to 140 miles per hour wind load.  Pervious pavers encourage walking through the landscaped areas featuring planter areas, and seat walls as well as benches and decorative landscaping and trellises.  The park blends with the “West Settlers” streetscape that has been installed along Fifth Avenue and Atlantic Avenue

Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, of Delray Beach created the design, and Patrick Vicknair, Project Manager, and Grant Wantshouse, Project Superintendent with Ocean Gate General Contractors, Inc. brought their vision to life.

A further connection with the community was achieved when the CRA released a call to artists to design a sculpture or artistic element for the new public plaza.  The competition has been narrowed to three finalists and the winner will be announced on Monday, June 28th, said Vince Wooten, with the CRA who administered the competition.  $15,000 has been set aside for the installation.
