Ocean Gate and Young Friends of Florida Oceanographic Clean Up Island
Date: 10-12-2007

Stuart, Florida - The sun was shining across blue skies as more than 50 people gathered at Sandsprit Park to join the effort to clean up Blue Moon Island on Saturday, September 29, 2007. Ocean Gate General Contractors and the Young Friends of the Florida Oceanographic Society teamed up to plan the affair that acted as the kick-off for Ocean Gate's Think Green Campaign that focuses on implementing recycling strategies at the office and at job site locations. In addition, the Ocean Gate Team is researching green building options that will enable the company to offer clients an additional service and preserve our ecosystem. Blue Moon Island will be used for environmental education through Florida Oceanographic Society thanks to the owners of the private island Ron & Lucy McCartney of Sewalls Point.

As the sun peaked over the horizon, Ocean Gate volunteers distributed t-shirts to participants as they arrived for the event. Excitement built as volunteers boarded the three donated boats that would shuttle them to and from the island. With garbage bags and gloves in hand, participants searched the island picking up trash until it was time to return to the mainland where they were greeted by the aroma of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. Onshore Roofing sponsored the lunch catered by Perry's BBQ to celebrate the community coming together to help preserve our environment. Participants dined at the pavilions while chatting about the success of the clean up and what treasures were found.

"It was great to see so many people from the community join us for this event," stated Mark MacDonald, President of Ocean Gate General Contractors. "Our environment is very important and we need to maintain it for future generations."

"We are so happy that Ocean Gate teamed up with the Young Friends for this event," stated Phil Wintercorn of the Young Friends of the Florida Oceanographic Society. "It's great to see businesses in our community taking an interest in our organization and supporting events like the clean up."
